From PR Newswire – Honda recently delivered 2013 Fit EV battery-electric vehicles to Google Inc. and Stanford University as a part of the Honda Electric Vehicle Demonstration Program. Along with the city of Torrance, Calif., each participant is now conducting general testing as well as providing specific feedback related to the future introduction of electric vehicles. The Honda Electric Vehicle Demonstration Program participants are the first recipients of the 2013 Fit EV in the United States.

“The goal of the Honda Electric Vehicle Demonstration Program is to better understand the challenges and opportunities associated with the advancement in battery-electric technology,” said Steve Center, vice president of the Environmental Business Development Office at American Honda.

“Honda has a long history with electric vehicles beginning with the introduction of our first battery-electric car, the EV Plus, nearly 15 years ago. Honda’s experience and the unique feedback that Google, Stanford University and the city of Torrance will provide will be valuable to the future introduction of battery-electric technology.”

Honda debuted the 2013 Fit EV at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show and announced plans to begin leasing the 123 city-mile per charge (76 mile range combined adjusted city/highway)(1) battery-electric commuter vehicle to customers in select California and Oregon markets during the summer of 2012 with a rollout to east coast markets planned for Spring 2013. Equipped with a 20-kWh lithium-ion battery and 92-kW coaxial electric motor, the Fit EV battery can be fully recharged in as little as 3 hours when connected to a 240-volt circuit.

Google Inc.The delivery of the Fit EV to Google Inc. was marked by an employee ride and drive. Nearly 100 ‘Googlers’ took the Fit EV for a spin around the Google Mountain View, Calif., campus. Google will now use the Fit EV as a part of its G-Fleet, an employee car-sharing service that features numerous plug-in vehicles. Google’s participation in the Honda Electric Vehicle Demonstration Program will involve analysis of vehicle usage including CO2 reduction, energy consumption on a miles/kWh basis and overall energy cost.

Stanford University Automotive ResearchOver the past year, Honda has collaborated Stanford University professors, researchers and students from several departments including Mechanical Engineering and Psychology through various seminars and classes. The year-long collaboration resulted in a research direction on how to study the psychological and physical reactions of using battery-electric vehicles and how these reactions differ when driving a traditional gasoline-powered vehicle.

With the Fit EV now at Stanford, the research team will use both the battery-electric vehicle and a gasoline-powered Fit to test their theories. Successful methodology implementation will yield a goal of not only decreasing anxiety associated with new technology, but also increasing joy in the driving experience. Ultimately, the research results will help Honda to better understand customer acceptance of battery-electric vehicles and how to overcome physiological obstacles associated with the adoption of new technologies.

Matthew Broderick Reprises Ferris Role in Honda CR-V Ad For Super Bowl 46

Ferris is back!

Well, sort of. He’s definitely back for at least 30 seconds come February 5th, but check out the entire 2+ minute Super Bowl ad that Honda ingeniously concocted and tell us what you think in the comments section below.

Ferris Bueller Super Bowl Ad Likely A Honda Commercial

Comments Off

From MTV.com’s Kevin Sullivan – A 10-second preview of a Super Bowl ad took the internet by storm on Thursday. The clip featured actor Matthew Broderick throwing open the curtains of a window, looking into the camera and asking, “How can I handle work on a day like today?”

That’s before the classic “bow-bow-chicka-chicka” from “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” plays, ending the preview with just the date of the Super Bowl left to tease us.

It seems clear that Broderick reprises the role of Ferris Bueller, but the preview told us nothing else. The YouTube video listed no company and didn’t suggest the product that the ad would ultimately feature.

MTV News reached out to both Broderick and one of the producers of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” Tom Jacobson, for comment, but neither responded to our requests.

Then Friday (January 27), the automotive blog Jalopnik reported that a source “familiar with Honda’s operations” revealed that Ferris will appear in a commercial for the car company during the Super Bowl. “The source also added that the spot was going to mimic much of the original film, except this time prominently featuring Hondas,” Jalopnik reported. “The big jump the two valets do in Cameron’s dad’s Ferrari? We hear this time it’s going to be a Honda CR-V.”

Jalopnik’s source also said Honda apparently put a lot of money behind the ad, even going as far as to hire “The Hangover” director Todd Phillips to create the spot.

Although the Honda story sounds likely, we will have to wait until February 5 to find out exactly what Ferris has been up to.

Honda Predicts Excellent 2012, Backed by New Accord

Honda Predicts Excellent 2012, Backed by New Accord

From Autoevolution.com – Honda has been one of the automakers that’s been struck hard by the natural disasters in Japan and Thailand last year, not to mention the fact that the new Civic has received a lot of criticism in the US. But the company’s CEO, Takanobu Ito sees the next fiscal year ending March 2013 as one of their best in the past five years since the banks started going under in America, prompting the start of the crisis.

So it’s back to the good ol’ times, but why? Well, the new Accord that was shown in pre-production concept form at the Detroit Auto Show has something to do with it. Also, a really early refresh is coming for he Civic launched just last year, as Honda tries to rectify its errors.

“It will be the year of the complete rebound,” Ito said at the company’s Tokyo headquarters, says Bloomberg. “Sales in North America will lead the recovery. We’ll introduce a fully revamped Accord in the fall, and that will be a big plus to our sales.”

First Test: 2012 Honda Ridgeline Sport

2012 Honda Ridgeline Front Three Quarters photo

From Motortrend.com’s Allyson Harwood – Honda’s Ridgeline has always been an in-between vehicle. It’s a hybrid mix of sport/utility and truck, basically an SUT similar to the Hummer H2 SUT, Chevrolet Avalanche, Cadillac Escalade EXT, and Ford Explorer Sport Trac.

Since Honda joined this group for the 2006 model year, a lot has changed — all but the Avalanche/Escalade are gone, and those may disappear in a year or two — but not much has changed with the Ridgeline. That led to rumors that the unibody half-ton was also going to go the way of the rest of the SUT category.

However, not only does Honda not refer to this as an SUT (Honda calls it a pickup), it also says it has no intention of discontinuing the model. As Sage Marie, manager, Honda Truck Product Planning, said in a statement a few months ago, “In no uncertain terms, the reports in the media that we have plans to discontinue the Ridgeline pickup truck are false.
To the contrary, Ridgeline has a significant role in the Honda lineup, and it is expected to continue in the foreseeable future.” Honda dealers like having a pickup to offer, and this one was created to be, really, the Honda of pickup trucks. That’s great for Honda buyers who may be interested in towing on occasion or carrying muddy gear that may stain the carpet in a sport/utility vehicle.

Another part of Marie’s statement was the announcement of a new trim level of the Ridgeline, known as the Ridgeline Sport. There haven’t been many changes to this truck since it first came out — the most significant was when horsepower went from 247 to 250 and torque increased by two to 247 lb-ft — so we were curious to see what was new about the truck.

The 2012 Honda CR-V Is Made For Canada, New England Weather

Comments Off

Smaller is bigger. That’s the start of the 2012 Honda CR-V story.

What’s more, this remade compact crossover is more powerful, has better fuel economy, a better all-wheel-drive system and a so-called “value” story.

Smaller is bigger? Honda’s engineers and designers are almost giddy talking about a lower and shorter overall CR-V with more cabin and cargo room. The secret? They moved the windshield forward and lowered the cargo floor. There is also an improved instrument panel and, unlike with the latest Civic, the cabin materials are pretty decent.

The CR-V, of course, is Honda Canada’s second best-selling vehicle and one of Honda’s top sellers worldwide. This rig matters. A lot. Especially in the wake of the redesigned 2012 Civic.

The Civic, as you know, has been whacked by critics for shortcomings that start with an interior seemingly inspired by Filene’s Basement. A repeat of the Civic launch would be a major disaster for Honda.

But that doesn’t seem to be the case here, even though the CR-V and the Civic share the same basic mechanical base. Moreover, the 2012 CR-V is following in the tire tracks of the Civic in the most important way of all way: pricing.

The base model has dropped to $25,990 versus $26,290 for the 2011 starter wagon. At the other end, Honda Canada has a new top-of-line Touring model at $34,990. The 2011 CR-V topped out at $33,490. The 2012 Touring is the ritzy CR-V, loaded up with standard AWD, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, chrome door handles, roof rails and a long list of other standard features on all CR-Vs: Bluetooth HandsFreeLink yakking, a full-colour multi-information display, a multi-angle rearview camera with guidelines and heated front seats. air conditioning, cruise control, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, rear-seat heater ducts and a 160-watt AM/FM/CD player.

Honda is anxious to share all this, and to reclaim its mojo with a successful CR-V launch. That said, let’s give Honda credit for owning up to past Civic mistakes. At December’s Tokyo Motor Show, Honda Motor president Takanobu Ito took personal responsibility for the bad Civic reviews, noted Automotive News. The company’s global research and development chief said Honda simply took its eye off the two most important balls in the car business: the competition and the customer.

Yoshiharu Yamamoto, president of Honda R&D, told Automotive News that with the 2012 Civic, “our competitors, including Hyundai and Ford, set clear targets to make their cars better than the Civic. We probably did not pay close enough attention to where our competitors were at.” Confession is good for the soul, correct?

So is the realization that the CR-V is one of four core models for Honda and all will have been remade by the middle of next year. Honda is a car company with only a handful of high-volume offerings, so the pressure is on to make each one a winner. The relatively new Odyssey minivan is excellent, the new Civic, not so much. Next year we’ll get a new Accord mid-size car.

With the CR-V, the designers have delivered a wagon with a more aerodynamic design. Prettier? Not so sure, though the slicker sheet metal is a critical for fuel economy. Bake in a weight reduction and less engine friction and out pops a CR-V with slightly more horsepower (185 versus 180 before), quicker acceleration and better fuel economy – despite the mostly carryover powertrain.

The numbers: the 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine is rated at 9.0 litres/100 km city/6.5 highway (two-wheel drive) and 9.2 city/6.6 highway (AWD). Honda’s engineers are also touting the new “ECON” operating mode for those who want to squeeze out even more fuel efficiency. The four-banger is the only engine Honda offers with the CR-V; there is no V-6 or turbocharged option, as is the case with some rivals.

To improve the drive, Honda stiffened up the CR-V with a strengthened tailgate area and thicker gauge steel in certain areas. The AWD system now has electronic actuation of the torque split mechanism between the front and rear wheels, though the basic design is a carryover hydraulic system. The improvement is simple and important: the rear wheels always get some power at startup and 100 per cent of engine torque can be sent to the front or rear wheels. Also to save fuel, Honda has gone to full electric power steering.

The cabin is comfortable and tasteful and even clever in some ways. For instance, the split-folding rear seats will drop flat with the touch of a lever easily reached from the tailgate. A nifty space in the centre console provides excellent storage, where it’s often needed.

Cars.com Honors 2012 Honda Pilot With “Family Car of the Year” Award

Comments Off

From Cars.com - This year’s Family Car of the Year is the Honda Pilot.

With spacious seating for eight and a thoughtful blend of family-friendly features, Cars.com editors also picked the Honda Pilot as the winner of this year’s $37,000 SUV Shootout). The Pilot has a nice balance of size, roominess, efficiency and versatility for even the busiest of families. Parents juggling life, work and multiple kids’ soccer teams while trying to maintain a sense of sanity (good luck!) will have a true partner in the Pilot.

Our editors appreciated the Pilot’s large number of storage nooks to keep all the stuff families carry around well-organized. They also took note of the second-row seats that slide back and forth to increase the amount of legroom for either second- or third-row passengers. The second-row seats also tilt and slide forward easily for access to the third row.

The Pilot’s large cargo space features additional storage under the cargo load floor, and this SUV’s great blend of available technologies will make life on the go just a little more pleasant. Despite its boxy appearance, which, by the way, contributes to an open-feeling cabin, the drive quality in the Pilot is a comfortable blend, without the body tilt and sway one would anticipate in such a tall SUV.

“We’re delighted to see the eight-passenger Pilot’s versatility and family-friendly attributes recognized with this prestigious award,” said Vicki Poponi, assistant vice president of product planning, American Honda Motor Co. “The newly refined and more fuel-efficient Pilot provides real value and surprising sophistication for anyone shopping in the segment.”

This year marks the fifth anniversary of the Cars.com Family Car of the Year award, which was presented last year to the Honda Odyssey. Launched in June 1998, Cars.com is an online destination for car shoppers that offers information from consumers and experts to help buyers formulate opinions on what to buy, where to buy and how much to pay for a car.
